Pearl fruit is a self-pollinating climbing plant that produces large clusters of fruit that resemble bunches of grapes. It produces bright red berries that ripen from mid-August to mid-September.
The fruit tastes sweet, sour and juicy. Rich in vitamins, it can be eaten raw or dried, or stored and sweetened for use in juices, extracts, preserves, infusions, or wines and cordials.
Lush vines can be planted over a fence, gazebo or pergola and form a great privacy screen. In the Far East, pearl fruit is one of the most popular herbal plants along with ginseng.
🌱Seed introduction
- Dry the seeds and place them in the refrigerator for 2 weeks to break dormancy.
- Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours.
- Sow seeds in fine-textured soil. Covering with about 1 cm of soil is enough.
- Be careful not to let the soil dry out until the seeds germinate.
🪴Breeding tips
1.Light
It thrives in full sun, but can also tolerate semi-shady conditions. A sunny location helps its flowers and fruits grow.
2.Temperature
Pearl fruit has strong adaptability to temperature and is resistant to cold and heat. But the most suitable growth temperature is between 15°C and 25°C.
3.Soil
It does not have strict soil requirements, but loose, well-drained soil is suitable. Choose from a mixture of leaf, peat and perlite.
4.Moisture
It has high water requirements, especially during the vigorous growth period. Keep the soil moist but avoid standing water to prevent root rot. Watering frequency can be increased during hot summers, but should be moderately reduced in winter.
5. Fertilize
Adequate nutrients need to be provided during the growth period, which is spring and summer. You can choose decomposed organic fertilizer and apply it once a year in spring and summer. Growth is slower in winter, so fertilization can be temporarily stopped.
6. Pruning
Shape pruning of Schisandra chinensis can help control the shape of the plant and improve the ornamental effect.
